Coming to you from the studios at the Illinois Rock and Roll Museum on Route 66. It's the Rock and Roll Chicago podcast Hey everybody, it's Ray the roadie and this is happy Hollywood Mike happy Hollywood Mike again That's two weeks in a row. You've been happy.

I have been you know, that's kind of an odd thing for me, isn't it? Yes, it is. No, you're grumpy. Yeah, cuz sometimes yeah, I can be grumpy.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, but you know, you know what though? What we don't have Justin Fields anymore.

No, we don't you know What do you feel about but he's been gone for a few months now. Yeah, it is true because considering when this is coming out And I don't know how I feel about that how do you feel about that I did really didn't care I Since we I decided that since we have a totally new offensive coaching staff. Yeah If we keep fields or we draft Williams, yeah, they both got to learn a whole new offensive system Yeah doesn't matter I keep I keep thinking that that scene in Major League where they're you know The the Japanese groundskeepers are sitting out in the bleachers going on.

There's still shitty Well, it is the Bears yeah It's true. You know, I don't know my son is my son pays attention all this stuff I and I've only heard things through the grapevine. Mm-hmm, but What's his name Caleb? You know this this this new guy they're saying everybody, you know If what he did at the combine is true because like I said, it's all hearsay.

Mm-hmm. Um, I don't like him Yeah, apparently he went to the combine and didn't do shit and he acted like I don't need to do anything I'm gonna go in the first round. Anyway, I'm gonna be picked first.

Well, yeah, but they were saying he's I don't like what he said He'll he'll do what he needs to for the two teams that are interested in drafting him. Yeah, he's not Why doesn't he have to do something for somebody that has no chance of getting him? Yeah, that's true I guess I guess that makes a little bit but then you never know the Bears might go with some Dude out of some division three school. They could you know, hey look, let's do another Trubisky.

Yeah Try that yeah, so what do you guys think about it? Who are these guys yeah, they're sitting there looking it's like I thought we were getting interviewed. Yeah No joining us tonight is 1920 are you doing guys? Oh, they brought their fans with the fans. Yeah, we got carried over.

I don't know. Hey Paddy's a they followed us Where were the girls man, you know, it's not like all dudes. Yeah, that's it.

Not that there's anything wrong with that No, not at all. Not at all. So how you guys doing man? I do an awesome man.

Thank you. Thank you Yeah, where'd you guys come in from? Well, I came out from Aurora. Oh, that's nice had a bit of a drive Wow Okay, so yeah, you're relatively close.

Yeah, Southside, Chicago. Oh, that's not yeah Yeah, so it's not Green Bay We did have a guy come down from Green Bay drove all the way from Green Bay and back again in the same in the Same day. Holy cuz he yep Yep He played in a band that his brother was based here and they they get together and they play in a band and he came Down for and drove all the way back to Green Bay same time You know, I wish we could have done a little longer podcast I hate that he was here for 20 minutes and jumped in the car and turned around.

Yeah He didn't have anything to say. He said yeah. Yeah.

So tell us a little bit about your band, man What do you guys do? Well, we're a cover band we do 90s and 2000s rock and That's what we do man. So who's here with us? Why don't you introduce yourself? So everybody knows who's talking so I'm Andre So I'm the lead singer and we got over here our drummer and guitar player I'm Tim Tim McMahon drums played up percussions This guy over here. My name is Mark.

I'm the rhythm guitarist and And he just had his tooth pulled. Yeah I might sound a little weird, you know, so don't mind me guys. Yeah, he's trooper though.

He's a trooper He's got something numb in the pain over that's right, that's perfectly fine. We totally like that. Yeah.

Yeah, so 90s and 2000s rock so you were like still sperm cell when you started hearing the music that you're Playing I'm cuz you guys look pretty darn young to me 40. Are you really? Yeah. Wow You're good-looking 40 year old Say like Nirvana all the way to Metallica.

Okay with uh, you know other awesome bands mixed in there, too Yeah, Papa Roach 311. Okay So it's all I take it that's one of your favorite songs to cover there's both of you got excited Metallica are my two. Okay.

Yeah, I got I gotta go with Pete Roach, man. Yeah Yeah, so yeah, I can you see you're you're a little bit younger than these guys Yeah, tell your influences a little bit different. Yeah, definitely.

Yeah. So who started this whole ride? Who was the person that put this band together? Myself and this guy right here Tim. Okay.

Yeah, so tell us the story. All right. Well, actually we had a Female lead singer but right before this guy joined.

Okay, not sorry Andre. It's not this guy We were still called 90-20 but are like the music that we did was completely different But it's still it sounded the same is what we did is we turned like hip-hop and pop songs Into rock that explains it because I was looking for stuff on you guys and in all sudden I saw like a cover of like Billie Jean was that you guys that was and it was a female voice Okay something I wasn't I wasn't trying I wasn't making the connection so that was you guys yeah at one at one point in time Okay. All right And then uh, and I came around and we started getting him a little more nitty-gritty with it So what made you decide? Okay, we're gonna ditch this taking like pop songs and turning him into hard rock She left she left What she says goes She didn't want to do just strictly just rock covers, okay I mean, but she liked the rock music aspects, right? But just not rock already saw their songs are already rock songs.

So that begs the question Why'd you do it in the front do what why? You know cuz of her. Yeah, that was pretty much a voice. Okay.

All right. So which one of you was dating her? None. Okay, which one of you was dating? Cuz it's cuz it sounds like okay, we're gonna we've got this female singer, right and we want to be in a rock band and But yeah, but our singer she doesn't really want to do hard rock music so we're gonna take a Britney Spears song and play it as if Metallica wrote it and we're gonna and we're gonna do that because She's my girlfriend That's kind of that's kind of what it sounds like a little bit you are right on that because I know we've been in situations Like that to the band we were in prior to this one The bass player started dating the singer who wasn't she was a female now There's anything wrong with that like you guys said James, but uh, so then that happened in the in the band prior to this so, you know, that's normally the situation anyways, but you know, it's a Couple or something but right now she was just a friend and was looking to do side thing And okay, so now and now what's the now there was another? There was another band that I found when I was searching for you guys to Like the Darby's or Okay, the Darby's, okay, so so who so was that you me and him that was that was the two you together So you guys had that band? All right So so we need the whole evolution your fans want to know where this all came from Give us the family tree of how this whole band came together See where do I start dude? Start with the Darby's because I'll take when I went when I went to find when I went to find you guys the first thing That showed up was the Darby's and then I had to look Then I then I had to look for 90-20 hmm, I so I Forgot what year the Darby's? Year, that was the last but it was the last year that you guys have a video on YouTube or anything was 2018 We started out before this.

I would say 2016 okay, I would say There were maybe 2015 at the end of it. Maybe I Remember a long time ago, but uh Yeah, so it was actually originally called dark marble and this is actually how it evolved As that came up to oh my god, that's too funny Okay, so this is kind of funny so Dark marble who is my myself? Tim here, but he wasn't a drummer there. Well, he still was but he didn't play drums.

He was the bassist Okay, and our other friend Tony was on drums blah blah blah and my ex-girlfriend Was my ex-girlfriend was one of the singers along with My ex-girlfriend was One of the singers along with our lead singer Ed and he was all it was also the lead guitarist Oh, so we want we just wanted to figure out like a cool name, right a very original name, I guess And so we looked up this is all based on my stupid ex-girlfriend's The work her name Maura and Gaelic okay means dark, okay and Marmo and like Greek or dead Greek, I think something like that is Marble so he just put the two words to dark mark dark marble It's not cool. And then but it's how it gets into the darbles. It's funny part She's not my girlfriend anymore, you know, right? So she's not singing for us So so and so and that's how it all yeah, but we liked the name Okay, so we kind of just wanted to like sort of rhyme in a sense Okay, and so we kind of like yeah like for me I came up with it I was also like listening to the Beatles at the time, right? And then that kind of stuck in my head like kind of like a Beatles type name like the darbles the darbles Okay.

Yes, and So that's how that happened. Yeah. Yeah see and they totally tried to play off that it wasn't about a chick, right? By the way more if you're if you listen to this a what's up The origin of the name is great.

Yeah. Yeah. Thank you very much.

You've provided entertainment for us here Okay, so you guys are you guys are the darbles right and you're jamming and I saw you guys You're like in a tent in the backyard You're having a good time playing some hard rock music and stuff and then what happens what all of a sudden makes you decide? Okay, this is done. Now. It's time for something else Ed yeah Haha, sorry, dude, you're up there Uh Yeah, hooked.

I'm drunk. Oh, okay and went the wrong way and The whole thing just fell apart. Sure.

Sure. Okay. All right.

Well that sorry to hear about that I know we went through myself with the loss of a band member not because of drugs or anything But it's always a hard thing and have actually it it happened to me twice. It happened to me twice It's not a fun thing story for another time, but okay All right So you guys just decided to move on from that and you put together this band So tell us a little bit about what you got how long you've been together and who's missing by the way Is it is it our lead guitarist? Okay, so there's four and and and Our soon-to-be new permanent bass player, okay, who is she? We have our awesome buddy Ryan that's filling in for the our these next these two shows in May Okay, but he's in another band like death metal band. Okay.

All right, so we can't 100% commit to us, right? so after those we got a Land somebody else. Sure, right, right, right. And so you're in the process of looking right now.

Yes Yeah, one that can sing backup vocals and harmonies to Alice in Chains. You're asking a lot. You're asking a lot Mm-hmm.

Yeah, right. That's right So any any of the end of our bass player friends that are out there who's looking for a permanent gig and you want to? Play some 90s rock and some 2000s rock Contact these guys. Yeah, true.

Yeah, sign us a Facebook message hit us right up. Yeah. Yeah, so respond We were that's my numb.

Yeah. Yeah, no problem. You respond right away.

Yeah, okay Well pay for you get lots of beer, you know Rocker now that but that's not true though because I've seen some of the some of the shows you guys have played you guys have Done some pretty cool stuff lately You opened up for somebody my train was it night train Okay. All right. Yeah.

Yeah, so that that looked where was that? It was that the Hobart Art Theater. Okay. Oh, no kidding That's where that was.

Wow. Okay. I was trying to figure out where that was It looked familiar, but I know I've been there before so that's why I looked familiar to me.

So that's pretty cool That's pretty cool. That's great a little later. Yeah Yeah, so what so what are the the biggest influences you mentioned your favorite bands? But when you guys are sitting around thinking about a setlist and what you're gonna do next, what are the bands that usually come up? It's a good question Well, I'm more on the on the heavier side I'm more like I said Papa Roach Slipknot corn all the new metal wave of music.

Yeah Yeah, so based on your vocal range and what you like to sing. Is that pretty much where the songs are coming from? Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah, it's weird man, because I Don't have like a defined Kind of range. Mm-hmm. It just whatever the the need right comes in It's what I feel right, right.

Okay. Well, I think you know, you guys have guitars and everything So you might as well, you know put them to use so you can stop talking because you got your Tooth going on over there. Yeah, you know We don't want you to start bleeding or anything on the table and stuff if you got if you got to get up and go It's like spitting the garbage I Swallow it.

Yeah, man. Alrighty, then we'll be right back. That's right.

You're listening to the rock-and-roll Chicago podcast I'm Christy from crime cave podcast I've had a huge interest in true crime since my days of watching marathons have snapped back in the mid 90s I needed an outlet to talk about the cases that have haunted me for a very long time With each episode under 20 minutes, I shine a light on some of the most bizarre cases in the last 50 years Join me in the crime cave Hi, I'm Rick Anthony I'd like to thank my radio brothers Ray the roadie and Hollywood Mike for allowing me to tell you about my podcast The someone you should know podcast we spotlight musicians authors and interesting people and we like to say we're making a difference one artist at a Time the podcast is heard twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays And you could check it out on your favorite streaming platforms and on the web at someone you should know podcast com That's the someone you should know podcast with me Rick Anthony making a difference one artist at a time. And here you go 1920 90 20 All right guys. Well, this one goes out to all of our fans that speak or know any Spanish I do a little bit of a solo set for the guy so they can take a little break This one's called besa me Oh I want to look you in the eyes, to be by your side and to see you here Who knows if tomorrow I'll be far away, far away from you Kiss me, kiss me a lot As if it were the last time tonight Kiss me, kiss me a lot And they're all smacking their computer and they're trying to figure out Did the website change and something happened because we're sitting here talking about 90s and 2000 And he comes out with that Where the fuck do you think you are? I wasn't expecting that.

No, no I was expecting him to come out with some papa roach. He's over here talking about He's over there Run When the when the panties start flying the stage you stick to it You got no argument there, that's absolutely They want you to sing liberace all night long. You sing liberace all night long and bras and panties flinging like rubber bands, you know whatever No, that was fantastic.

That was good. I wasn't expecting that one. No, so So what makes a hard rock band just decide all right, you know, we're tired you're gonna go over there And you're gonna do something and just in the middle of the sentence you start doing that We were kind of freaking out.

So A lot of the music that I started singing with this band I've heard the tune because I listened to on the radio. I was I was a younger. I'm actually the youngest for the band But I didn't know the lyrics Uh, I would know the song like playing it or I would know the bass line But I never knew knew the lyrics or how it went so trying to fix in or Arrange the time.

I was like, well, why don't you just just let me grab the acoustic you guys have a seat. Relax, you know Retune your guitars have a couple shots and and see where this goes and that always works That always works well with the guys in the band. Oh, yeah, go.

Do you have a couple shots? Yeah Yeah, really? Can I get three two? Yeah, sure. Yeah Yeah, yeah, so and when do you do this at what point in the in the show do you do that? It's usually in the middle of a set in the middle of a set. Yeah, so we'll play the first set Sometimes take a little bit of a break come back throw some tunes in there They go take a break I fill up about a half an hour Give or take and then the guys come back in and then we keep rocking until the end of the night Well, that's why you make the most money in the band.

Yeah Yeah And you've you've you do this at every show Our longer shows. Yeah, you're longer shows. Yeah, okay, and how long have you been doing that? With 90 20, I think we've done it for the last like four or five gigs.

Okay So it's I mean, it's not like it's been like for years. It's like the past four or five gigs you said Yeah, yeah. Well again, and also i'm not the youngest but the newest member of the band, right? Right, right, right, right.

How's the how's the crowd response been? Pretty good really pretty good when you see the phones come out and the story's flying like that. That's awesome Wow, you know, that's unique. That is cool.

I gotta learn me some spanish No, that's pretty unique man, you totally caught me off guard I don't know where to go from from there I don't I don't know where to go from there. So so I mean obviously Um, you've been influenced by other things other than papa roach. Yeah.

All right, so Where'd this start for you? Oh, that would have to be uh, my all-time favorite band It's a spanish blues rock band from mexico city called el tri Okay, so if anyone any fans out there will three, you know hit that like button man. Yeah, no kidding Um, yeah, I started listening to them when I was in Spanish blues band. Yeah.

Yeah, so a lot of the influence of uh, Rock and roll and like 50s rock started migrating over to mexico Sure. Yeah, and a lot of bands started covering them, right? But then as time went by they started making their own songs and they started capturing moments in time Of history of government of oppression of all sorts of different Uh moments in history and then all of a sudden I came across the cassette And I started listening to it. I'm like, wow, this is awesome When did this happen when I started, you know asking uncles and aunts that listen to the music and it just Kept rolling from there.

Yeah, i'm gonna have to check that out. Very cool. Yeah I didn't know Mexican blues.

Yeah. Yeah existed. What was it called again? El tri.

El tri. Okay. Okay Yeah, check that out.

It started. Uh, their first name was uh, three souls in my mind. Okay, and then That's a mouthful exactly.

So especially in mexico. They're like, well, let's go see el tri el tri el tri And they just stuck from there, right? Right. Yeah, cool And so Compare them to somebody like who would who would they sound like somebody that we all may have heard of I don't know.

It's it's such a It's so similar and different at the same time because they took elements of 50s rock and rock and blues. Okay but It it's you can't compare it. Uh, maybe maybe somebody like los lobos Maybe yeah, but but grittier because uh at the time it was outlawed to play rock in mexico Okay, right.

So coming from the streets coming from the slum coming from the struggle, uh playing in in like warehouses or Wells, like there were massive wells that they would use like four or five ladders to get down there to be able to start playing Um, that's why it's literally underground music. Yeah Legit literally is they probably heard it on the x. Yeah It could have yeah. Yeah.

Yeah. Wow Interesting. So so About how old were you when you discovered that band? I was like seven.

Okay. Wow. Wow.

Interesting That's when you picked up a guitar No, it's funny. I never wanted to play guitar It just sort of happened If you say I woke up one day and picked up the guitar and i've been playing ever since like you're an idiot savant I might have to hate you So it it's fun I I have a bit of a duality because I I play rock and and metal during the night But during the day I play at a at a church choir. Okay, good.

So, uh Everybody left and I was the only one Kind of hanging out there. So they're like well, you got to play guitar now. I'm like, what do you mean? I don't know I play power chords.

I like like right at that time now I started getting to like pop roach and slipknot and all the heavier bands I'm like, you can't translate that. I'm like, well you either sink or swim right and it just took off from there. Yeah Interesting.

Yeah. Yeah Very cool When were when did you like I guess I guess when did like your first band come around when you decide? Okay, i'm gonna Join the band sing some hard rock It was a minute because again, i'm i'm a very timid guy believe it or not Um, it was I have to give a shout out to my boy bill He was uh, he was a driver with me and he would hear me sing with my headphones on And he's like well, you should come out to an open mic and I started doing open mics and all of a sudden I came across a local metal band. I joined them And I split with them.

I joined another urban rock spanish band I did my own thing. I had a couple backing tracks. I couldn't find any musicians And uploading my music through tiktok is how don found me our guitar player, right? So he's like, hey you do you play like around chicago? I'm like, yeah, sure.

Definitely. Yeah, whatever What's around the corner? He's like cool. Do you want to audition like yeah Yeah, i'm there all the time yeah, that's right and and you grew up in aurora Pretty much.

Yeah. So what were the open mics and stuff that you would go to? uh, it was uh an Military bar. It was an amvets downtown aurora.

Um o'malley's there was also bally doyle Oh, yeah. Yeah. Oh o'malley's and bally.

I've played bally many time and definitely o'malley's. Wow. Yeah.

Yeah, no kid Okay, so so we found out in some similar places and everything. Yeah, there's a studio right over there too gremlin studios I do a lot of recording. Yeah.

Well, yeah. Yeah, I um, shout out to sam at gremlin studios. I was his first client No, I was yeah when he opened up his he opened up the doors at gremlin studios and I was in a band at the time um called days of freedom We were we played All the exact same music that you guys are playing I mean we were doing 90s and 2000 rock and a whole bit back when it was actually still on the radio and uh and we recorded our demo there with sam and sam beckley and I and I've gone back to him every time i've needed any kind of uh recording work, but god i've known him for over 20 years That's cool.

And then over there right over there almost almost across the street from the casino over there So down there by the jewels down there by the jewels. No. Yeah, that's exactly where ran So when did it start for you guys? When did it start for you? When did you start playing the drums? uh, so I I started out in guitar actually and so i'm I'm a guitar player at heart Does anybody want to play the instruments they're playing in this band? No, so even when i'm on drums I wear like masks and shit and uh, so I try to get creative back there and sometimes i'm like the last thing i'm worrying about is playing the drums right now changing out masks and wearing wigs and shit and just having fun but guitar is what I started out on and uh, but then You know, it just came down to you're playing with somebody a guitar player you're jamming with and then you need a drummer and so I had I purchased a guitar from a guitar center It was a flying v and I had it for like a week And then I met a drummer and he's like, I don't have drums so I brought it back and got my first drum kit and then had that ever since and then I started on that after he quit jamming with me.

So And in between that and in between there you played you played bass with uh, the other band. Yeah I just jump around man. I just have fun on any instrument, you know, so okay just playing Fun, you know, so how long have you been playing the drum set? Uh I mean, did you take lessons for all this stuff? You just said no, we need a drummer Okay, well i'll be the drummer right now guitar.

I I took me and my brother started together when we were 15 uh we took about three lessons and Realized the guy would take phone calls the whole time and your half hour was really about five minutes and you're paying and then He was just showing us power chords and we uh, you know picked up tablature on our own and just You know kind of self-taught then and yeah, I was always a rhythm player. I'm not a You know a big lead guy except nirvana's, you know, right little melody, uh, you know harmony souls and shit. But uh yeah, and stuck to drums and Found this guy.

I've been jamming with him him on and off for about 15 years. So I just and then That's my story man, I know we got andre's badass and we got a pretty good lineup going so yeah Right. So when did you start playing the mouth harp and stuff? I mean, I'm just assuming that you didn't start off on guitar.

I mean just like the rest of these He was a little he started off with the I got tired of doing that. No actually me my story is I started off being uh, I was a mvp pitcher or I was an athlete and then sure. Yeah, I shattered my pitching hand and had to take a season off.

Okay, and then uh, you know, then I Ran into the or fell into the the party crowd. Yeah, you know in high school and And one of them played guitar and I was just watching him play play the guitar playing all these nirvana. Nevermind songs.

I'm like Huh? I might as well. I'm gonna try it. I'm gonna try that.

I like that. I can play that with a broken hand. Sure Yeah So after my my hand healed I just bought a guitar and started playing guitars and I enjoyed that then Making the all-stars every year and wasting all my summers away playing baseball Yeah, but yeah, so yeah, i've been playing guitar since I was 14 So now I learned how to play and i'd say like 15 16 years ago.

I met this guy and Ever since then we've always usually been in the same projects together just different people rotating in and out Musical life partners. Yeah So you guys are like a package deal with all the stuff that you guys have been involved in yeah Yeah, yeah Okay, and really uh, hopefully it just keeps on going going from here. Yeah for sure.

Well, hopefully it does That's why we're here, right? That's why we're here. All right. Well, I think it's time to put you guys to work Let's uh, let's grab those bongos.

Let's let's switch the guitar player and the whole bit. That's right Let's hear something else from you guys. All righty.

We'll be right back You're listening to the rock and roll chicago podcast We got 90 20 back in the studio. Everybody playing. What are you guys gonna play wood wood? All right Is Try to see Is Quite the notion Yeah Our back song I love that the fans are back.

Yep. The fans are back. I love that song actually I'm so glad you guys played that one.

See Wasn't I right? I mean just rock that song out man. Just because you're playing acoustic doesn't mean you can't do that Cool, that's right. Awesome, man.

That's really cool. So how do guys find you? How do people uh, how do people search for you? Got a website. Uh We just have a facebook page and instagram.

Okay, and a tiktok, but we barely use it. Yeah. Yeah I don't know why it was just well, but you know, it's it's uh, you know, we talk about this almost every single episode Tiktok really isn't great for promoting a band, you know, facebook is the one right, you know You can set it up like a business and send out all the invites and do all that stuff And you know people will automatically get invites to your shows if they like their pages I mean, it's pretty it's pretty cool, you know, plus I mean you're 40 you said yeah Yeah, you're too old to use tiktok.

You gotta have Tiktok is a young man's game man Hey, hey, that's how I landed the gig man. So that's right. Hey, we use tiktok Oh, do we yeah the commercials I put out everywhere.

I I don't I make one for tiktok. I don't do tiktok Yeah, there's the tic tac or flip flop or whatever. I heard about you guys through tiktok actually It works it works and all those chinese people that know all about us now.

Oh, that's true. Yeah, that's right I'm currently still using myspace and I only have one friend tom and i'm i'm looking to branch out so Anybody anyone wants to throw me a throw me a friend request is tom still alive though? Is tom still alive on the on myspace? Yeah, we're hanging out next week. Oh, really? Okay.

Well, i'm still on aol dial-up Yeah, no, I mean facebook works it really does I mean There's a lot of people that are running a band. They don't have a website or anything like that There was going through yep going through facebook and it's free. Yeah, that is true So you just look for 90 20 and they'll find you 90 20 chicago You got to spell the word 90 then no space.
